New in the DylanCover.com collection: Ian Shaw

Gotta Serve Somebody (3:44)
Ian Shaw
A World Still Turning
CD: 441 Records FFO-0020; 2003 (US)

This jazz arrangement of Gotta Serve Somebody by British jazz vocalist Ian Shaw is a disappointment, to my ears. The staccato delivery and odd phrasing to make the lyrics fit the jazz arrangement does not work well.

This CD is listed on the Dylan Covers Jazz Collector's Guide.

Available (at very low prices) from: amazon.com
Also from: amazon.co.uk / amazon.de / amazon.ca

New covers: Chris Whitley & Jeff Lang

Dislocation Blues, a collaboration between the late Chris Whitley and Australian guitarist Jeff Lang includes two Dylan songs, When I Paint My Masterpiece and Changing Of The Guards. The album was recorded in April 2005, shorthly before Whitley's death, and released August 2006.
At this time the CD has only been released in Australia, but is available from:

New in the DylanCover.com collection: Karate

Tears of Rage (4:13)
Karate
In the Fishtank 12
CD: Konkurrent/Touch And Go; 2005 (US)

Karate was formed in Boston circa 1993, a so-called "post-rock" band. Their Tears of Rage is a low-key, no surprises version. The next track is a cover of The Minutemen's Bob Dylan Wrote Propaganda Songs.
In The Fishtank is a series of CDs by indie bands recorded and released by the Dutch label Konkurrent. The US version of the mini-album is shown (8 tracks, 21:31.)

Paul Thornton & Les Fradkin

A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall (5:41)
Paul Thornton & Les Fradkin
Godzology
CD: Renaissance Records RMED00132; 2000 (US)

Years before this year's Dylan cover album If Your Memory Serves You Well, Les Fradkin recorded this jangly version of Hard Rain with fellow Godz member Paul Thornton during 1993-94 sessions in New York City. In 2000 these tracks plus other older & newer recordings were remixed for this compilation.
Les sings Hard Rain and plays Rickenbacker 12-string guitar and acoustic guitar, Paul Thornton plays acoustic guitar, backed by a band.

New in the DylanCover.com collection: Roadhouse

All Along The Watchtower (6:44)
Knockin' On Heaven's Door (5:40)
Roadhouse
Broken Land
CD: Blues Matters BRMCD20061; 2006 (UK)

London blues-rock band Roadhouse takes on two of Dylan's most covered songs.
Watchtower rises above the ordinary by virtue of an alto sax added to the standard blues-rock mix. Vocal by Gary Boner.
The women of the band handle vocals on Knockin', sounding a bit Stevie Nicks-ish, but it's not enough to distinguish their version from all the others out there.
More about the band at the Roadhouse website.

Dylan. Danko. Disco... 3 words that should not have been combined!

There are now 1,195 sleeves & albums displayed in

New in the DylanCover.com collection: Dave Isaacs

Not poultry, but in the bird family...

It's All Over Now, Baby Blue (5:38)
Dave Isaacs
Old King Crow [EP]
CD: Shadow Brook SB006; 2006 (US - Nashville)

Nashville based singer-songwriter & guitarist Dave Isaacs and his trio present a fine version of Baby Blue plus 5 originals on this 6-song EP (31:54.)

From daveisaacs.com: “Recorded at Beat Hollow Studio in the hills of Nashville's West Meade neighborhood, the new EP Old King Crow is a raw and unpolished portrait of the dynamic and improvisational sound of the Dave Isaacs Trio...tracked mostly live with minimal overdubs.”
Available from: CD Baby

Comments and suggestions always appreciated.

New in the DylanCover.com collection:
Peter C. Johnson

One Too Many Mornings
Peter C. Johnson
Soul Sherpa
CD: Hi-N-Dry records (no number); 2004 (US)

Peter C. Johnson began performing in the clubs of Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1968, a contemporary of Bonnie Raitt and Chris Smither. After releasing several albums in the '70s, and leading the band The Manic Depressives, he did not record again until the last few years, including this 2004 album on the Cambridge indie label Hi-N-Dry. I don't know how he sounded in the '70s, but on One Too Many Mornings his voice can only be described as a hoarse whisper. Read more at petercjohnson.com

Used copies available from: amazon.com

Lady In The Water soundtrack

The version of The Times They Are A-Changin' by A Whisper in the Noise onthe Lady In The Water soundtrack (see July 17 post) is a different version than their album version from As The Bluebird Sings (see June 7 post). The vocal recording is likely the same, but the mix and edit are substantially different, the soundtrack version is a minute longer. Both versions will be listed in the DataBase at the next update.

New in the DylanCover.com collection: Rudy Rotta

It's All Over Now, Baby Blue
Knockin' On Heaven's Door
Rudy Rotta & Friends
Some of my favorite songs for...
CD: C&B 10224-2 (2006 reissue shown);
2004 (E.E.C.)

Italian bluesman Rudy Rotta recorded this benefit CD (for Solidarietà è) in 2004, with his band and "friends" John Mayall, Brian Auger, Peter Green & Robben Ford. Ford plays lead guitar on Baby Blue, no guests play on Knockin'. An enjoyable album throughout.

DataBase advertising ;(

The advertising appearing at the bottom of the DataBase pages is being added by the database service provider (baseportal.com), not by me. Supposedly it is a temporary test, but likely a sign of things to come. I hope it does not become too intrusive. Nothing is ever really free, is it? ;(

DataBase: Scans Needed

I have added a SCANS NEEDED link on the DataBase page. Clicking the link displays all the items for which scans are needed. If you can supply any of the missing images, please submit HERE.
(Alternately, you can upload your images to your own webspace or an image hosting site - such as photobucket.com - and send me the URL.)
Please attach only 1 scan per e-mail. I have a slow dial-up connection, so multiple large attachments will cause problems.
• Only the front artwork is required, I do not use reverse, inside or other views.
• For LPs, I only use complete scans. If you cannot scan a full album, you can scan them in several parts and I will try to paste them together, but success is not guaranteed.
• For 45s, picture sleeves are used even if the Dylan song is not shown.
• For non picture sleeve 45s, a scan of the Dylan cover label. I do not use scans of the non-Dylan side.
• Digital photos can be used only if of good quality, with no flash glare, etc.
• Identify the artists & title of the image if it is not obvious.
• Any scans submitted will appear at the next first-of-month update.

New in the DylanCover.com collection:
Royal Wade Kimes

Knockin' On Heaven's Door
Royal Wade Kimes
Cowboy Cool
CD: Wonderment Records RWK-889; 2004 (US)

I'm not a fan of country music, but I'm a sucker for cheap Dylan covers and found this 2004 CD by Nashville based country singer-songwriter Royal Wade Kimes in the used bin for a couple of dollars. Knockin' is an obvious choice for a country/cowboy singer to cover, and his 4:06 version doesn't stray too far from Bob's original. Note: Shooting Star on the CD is not the Dylan song.
